Dubai, United Arab Emirates, October 22nd, 2008 - Dubai Municipality announced at a press conference held at their premises on June 22nd, the inauguration for the first major Summit to tackle the issues of waste management and recycling in the Middle.

Held in association with the UNEP and under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality, the Middle East Waste Summit 2009 (MEWS) will be held at Dubai Airport Expo Centre from the 17th to the 19th of March 2009.

With the massive development activities taking place in the region coupled with the ever growing population, Waste Management is more than ever becoming a vital concern amongst corporations, individuals and the environment we live in. Organised by Turret Middle East, MEWS 09 is set to be the largest and most comprehensive Waste Management and Recycling event in the Middle East, with over 6,000 expected attendees. Currently, GCC countries rank in the top 10 of world waste producers with 120 million tons of waste per year, with the figure expected to reach 350,000 million tons by 2014. With the full support of the Dubai Municipality Department of Waste, Dubai will be taking the lead in addressing the need for developing Waste Management and Recycling solutions in the region.

"We always believe in the strategic partnership with the private sector in specialised fields; mainly as it promotes interaction between established companies and the government sector in the field of waste management both locally and regionally." Engineer Abdulla Al Rafea, Asst. Director General For Health and Environmental Services Sector

Richard Hease Chairman of Turret Middle East Said: "The Middle East Waste Summit is a key exhibition in the environment calendar. The conference will provide a unique opportunity to explore the future of Waste Management and Recycling including waste to energy in the Middle East."

The Middle East Waste Summit will call on the international community to respond to their responsibilities and the growing requirement of waste management and emphasise the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.
